A monkey is any primate that is not a human,
(lemurs, lorises, bush babies, and other
primitive primates), or ape. Monkeys make up two of the
three groups of simian primates, Old World monkeys and New
World monkeys. The other group is the apes.
Monkeys also have their own unique set of fingerprints just
like humans do. ... Monkeys have a brain that is large for
their size and it is part of the reason why they are so intelligent.
They are believed to be smarter than other primates including Apes and Lemurs.
Most monkeys have tails. Groups of monkeys are known as a 'tribe', 'troop'
or 'mission'. The Pygmy Marmoset is the smallest type of monkey, with adults
weighing between 120 and 140 grams. The Mandrill is the largest type of monkey,
with adult males weighing up to 35 kg.
Most monkeys eat nuts, fruits, seeds and flowers. Some monkeys also eat meat
in the form of bird's eggs, small lizards, insects and spiders.
Gorillas, orangutans, chimps and bonobos create nesting platforms in the trees,
whereas modern humans construct beds to lie on. But every other type of primate
does not sleep this way. ... Most monkeys actually sleep sitting in the trees,
balancing on a branch, often upright, resting upon their bottoms.
One of the most effective ways to annoy a monkey is to place it in proximity
to a flying squirrel, a new study of Japanese macaques has found. Researchers
have observed small monkeys called Japanese macaques going bananas at the sight
of a flying squirrel.
